Cowan is one Tennessee's oldest and most active "hot spots" for railroad activity, and there's no better place to see it than from Cowan's downtown railroad park, just one block from the Franklin-Pearson House. Observe this very active CSX mainline with its Cowan Pusher District - extra locomotives that help freight trains conquer the steep mountain grade over the Cumberland Plateau. While you're here, see the photos and hear the stories at Cowan Railroad Museum located inside Cowan's 100-year old depot.
Other nearby "hot spots" include Sherwood, Tennessee at the opposite end of the Pusher District, Stevenson, Alabama, and cities along the Caney Fork and Western short line from Tullahoma to Sparta. Chattanooga's famous Choo-Choo is just an hour's drive from Cowan, along with the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum (offering scheduled train rides).
